23 March 2023
A healthy fleet of 30 Tasar descended on the Sandringham Yacht
Club for the 2023 Victorian Tasar Stare Titles sponsored by
Rooster. In what was a test run for the forthcoming Tasar Nationals
December 28th - 31st and Worlds 2nd - 9th of January 2024,
Sandringham Yacht Club acquitted itself remarkably and every one of
the 30 boats left feeling confident, that the venue would produce a
world class event come December. Not that this was even in
question, Sandringham Yacht Club was chosen because of its ability
and track record in running such events. A full measurement of all
boats was undertaken with military precision, which all competitors
for the
Worlds and Nationals will need to undergo in December.
We were blessed by incredible weather for the State Titles, a full schedule of 8 races was run under the watchful and experienced eye of RO Stephen Aulich who will also be PRO for both regattas come December. Talk about Military Precision, Stephen had the Sandringham machine humming with exceptional race management, clear and decisive decision making and great off-water communication. Stephen is a rare example of an RO, who is truly there for the sailors.
A highlight of the regatta was the post racing briefing, in which all sailors partook. Eventual State Champions and former World Champions, Chris Dance and Pete Hackett opened up their considerable wealth of knowledge wallet and imparted some great tips to an eager audience. This initiative is something Chris and Pete were keen to implement after seeing the benefits the American fleet has gained by sharing information at the recent Seattle worlds, where the North Americans dominated the placings.
Local Sailors, James Sly & Eliza Solly, Harrison Sly and Zara Challis finished in 2nd and 3rd respectively. In fact the top 4 were filled by Sandringham locals. Maybe local knowledge? or maybe just exceptional sailors? In any case, the rest of the fleet were watching their transoms with a frequency to be admired.
With an expected fleet of 100 plus Tasars to enter the 2024 Worlds, we are excited to be hosted by the Sandringham Yacht Club and hope that some SYC members will want to be a part of the action and join us in what will be a truly memorable event, filled with great camaraderie from a group of sailors that know how to enjoy themselves on and off the water.
